From Abbott Elementary to Hacks, Hit Series Choose Los Angeles Over Out-of-State Alternatives
After enduring the triple blow of a global pandemic, dual Hollywood strikes, and California wildfires, LA production is showing signs of a robust rebound.
Though on-location filming in Los Angeles was down more than 22 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, several prominent television series are bucking the trend.
These productions are reaffirming their commitment to Hollywood by choosing to film in the city and surrounding areas rather than relocating to more cost-effective locales like Atlanta or Vancouver.
Abbott Elementary Anchors in Burbank
Quinta Brunson’s critically acclaimed ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary may be set in Philadelphia, but its production is firmly based in Burbank.

Interior scenes are shot at Warner Bros. Studio, while exterior shots feature L.A.’s Vermont Elementary, adding a touch of local authenticity to its East Coast setting.
Netflix and Hulu Bet Big on LA

Hulu’s limited series inspired by the true story of Ukrainian adoptee Natalia Grace used various Southern California locales, including Santa Clarita and Long Beach.
Meanwhile, Erin Foster’s Netflix rom-com brings viewers to real-life LA spots such as Pilates Eagle Rock and Mama Shelter, offering fans a sense of connection with their favorite scenes.

YouTube Stars and Studio Staples
YouTube content creators Michelle Khare and the duo Rhett & Link continue to produce in Los Angeles, with studio work centered in Burbank.
Their presence underscores a broader trend of digital-first talent bolstering LA production.
Family and Historical Dramas Rooted in the Valley
Apple TV+’s period family comedy starring David Oyelowo is set in 1969 San Fernando Valley, with filming largely completed in that very locale.
The show’s dedication to historical accuracy is complemented by its firm grounding in LA.
Hacks and Talk Shows Share Soundstages
Although Hacks initially focused on a Las Vegas residency, it didn’t shoot in Nevada until its third season.

The Max comedy has primarily filmed at CBS Television City, a venue also home to The Price Is Right and HBO’s weekly talk show featuring a leading comedian.
Legal Dramas and Rom-Coms Stay Local
Kathy Bates’ CBS legal drama may have started with a Toronto-shot pilot, but subsequent episodes were all filmed at Paramount Studios. Netflix’s sports comedy starring Kate Hudson also maintains local roots, filming on LA basketball courts while substituting Glasgow’s OVO Hydro for stadium exteriors.
Reality TV and Satire Continue the LA Tradition
RuPaul’s Drag Race continues its legendary run at Sunset Las Palmas Studios despite its international franchise growth. Likewise, Apple TV+’s satirical look at Hollywood’s studio system spans several iconic LA studios including Warner Bros., Sunset Gower, and The Lot at Formosa.
Mockumentaries and Medical Drama Embrace Local Sets
NBC’s new mockumentary about a chaotic ER in fictional Oregon began filming at St. Vincent Medical Center in Downtown LA before moving to the Universal lot. Max’s The Pitt, set in Pittsburgh, primarily uses Warner Bros. soundstages to recreate its East Coast environment.
Raleigh Studios Hosts Shondaland Mystery
Netflix’s murder mystery from Shondaland, centered on a fictional White House scandal, is being filmed at Raleigh Studios, continuing a long-standing tradition of LA production in political thrillers.
A Resilient Industry Finds Its Footing
Despite recent challenges, the television industry’s commitment to LA production remains steadfast. By opting to film locally, these new series are not only supporting the regional economy but also reinforcing Los Angeles’ status as the epicenter of the 21st century entertainment world.
